Joe Johnson is a partner with our firm with broad experience in complex commercial disputes, including international shipping and commodities trading matters, and a focus on arbitration and litigation. He has extensive experience in federal court and New York State court and has handled various arbitration proceedings.

Joe’s experience includes matters involving alleged fraud in the shipping of commodities, alleged market manipulation in the trading of commodities, and the defense of threatened penalties and sanctions under various regulatory regimes.

Joe is a 1994 graduate of Albany Law School of Union University (cum laude), where he was a member of its law review. He graduated from the University of Rochester in 1991. He began his legal career as a clerk to the Appellate Division of the New York State Supreme Court, Third Department. Thereafter, Joe became an appellate practitioner, perfecting and arguing more than forty appeals over a five year period. Since that time, Joe has handled a broad range of complex legal matters, with experience as both a commercial litigator and as a corporate attorney, practicing in the area of mergers and acquisitions and structured finance.

Highlights of Joe’s work include the following:

  • Representation of an Italian component airplane parts manufacturer in the Western District of Washington against its global client, an airplane manufacturer, for breach of contract based on the rejection of alleged nonconforming parts.
  • Representation of a publicly-traded online advertising company involved in related state and federal investigations regarding its business practices.
  • Representation of an Indian specialty-steel trading company in the Southern District of New York regarding the fraudulent delivery of the wrong product and the recovery of payment for same made under a letter of credit based on fraudulent presentment documents.
  • Representation of an investor in Chinese publicly-traded commodities companies in civil litigation and a federal investigation regarding his alleged market manipulation.
  • Representation of a U.S. nationally-branded peanut butter manufacturer in the Southern District of New York against its Mexican exporter regarding the alleged breach of their exportation agreement via various fraudulent means.
  • Representation of an Italian lingerie manufacturer/licensee in the Southern District of New York against its celebrity licensor for breach of contract.
